Recommendation 3: Convene a scientific advisory committee
Problem
A disconnect exists between scientific research and forest policy and management decisions. Global climate change threatens to increase the need to preserve ecological goods and services provided by public forestlands.
Goals
- To guide a program of adaptive management that addresses the ecological and economic benefits provided by public lands.
- To guide research priorities and inform decision-making in the context of scientific uncertainty.
Recommendation
Create a scientific advisory committee, consisting of National Academy of Science researchers, modeled after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Scientific Advisory Committee. This committee would guide forest management and research priorities in the context of global climate change.
