Recommendation 6: Support tribal land acquisition

In many cases, tribes have proven to be skilled natural resource managers, stewarding healthy landscapes and successfully restoring degraded ecosystems and endangered species. However, many traditional tribal territories have been lost over the years because of broken treaties, wholesale revocation of claims under the Allotment Act, and the policies of Termination. Despite federal positions that condemn previous abuses, the U.S. government still lacks a cohesive policy to support land acquisition by tribes.

To increase federal support for tribal land acquisitions that benefit the management and protection of natural resources.

Ensure that the Army Corps of Engineers and the Departments of the Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, and Defense support land acquisitions that promote the integrity and efficiency of tribal land management and landscape conservation.
